Three ‘Musts’ for the Waterfront Revitalization to Succeed

Waterfront Revitalization is the new buzz word around here. It looks like there are going to be A LOT of changes around the pier and harbor area. CenterCal Properties won the bid for the project and are currently in the design phase. Here’s a good summary article from the Daily Breeze, if you want to review. So far, they’ve done an exceptional job engaging the public and merchants, using their input, and getting the ideas on paper for community “buy-in.” The process has been diligent, thoughtful, and thorough. They definitely want to get this project right, meaning they have to get the right spaces, for the right mix of merchants, and for the right customers. Everyone has their own ideas/thoughts on what would be right for the project. I think for the project to succeed, it must have these three things:

1. Must Have Genuine Spaces and Buildings

The feel of the spaces and buildings must be genuine. The Waterfront Revitalization can’t feel forced onto those who may use it. When spaces and buildings are genuine, and they feel like they belong and are part of the city, then they’re accepted and used much more. It must embrace the past, while maintaining a vision of the future, to ensure it remains genuine. The more genuine the final outcome, the more acceptance it’ll have by all.

2. Must Attract and Keep Locals Using the Space

The success of the Waterfront Revitalization depends on attracting and keeping locals. This is critical to year-round use. I’ve talked to several people, each having lived in the area for years, who haven’t been to the pier or boardwalk. That’s incredible! The pier and boardwalk should be a local hub of activity and recreation. It should compete directly with Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, yet be something greater because of the draw of the pier and harbor. It’s time for Redondo Beach to shine in the South Bay, and the Waterfront Revitalization is the time to make this happen.

3. Must Attract Tourists from All Around the Globe

Lastly, Redondo Beach needs to remake it’s name as a place to enjoy for international tourists. Whether you know it or not, the Redondo Beach pier and international boardwalk already attracts quite a few international tourists. It’s close to Los Angeles, Hollywood, major theme parks, and the airport, making Redondo Beach a great hub for those who want to visit both the beach and the big city. Having a great product come from the Waterfront Revitalization Project would help attract even more tourists and keep the area vibrant and alive.

If you want a say in what happens along the new Waterfront Revitalization, be sure to join the next meeting on May 11 from 10 a.m. to noon and June 13 from 6-8 p.m. The meetings will be held at The Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, located at 1935 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Redondo Beach.
